INTERPRETING from the COMMUNITY

OUR INTERPRETER REGISTER

Bournemouth Interpreters’ Group CIC has its roots in the local minority language community. We are thus ideally placed to appreciate the needs of service providers and service users alike. The promotion of social cohesion is integral to all that we do.

All of our registered interpreters and translators comply with strict Membership Criteria and have signed our Code of Practice. All are fully covered by our comprehensive public liability and professional indemnity insurance when on Group assignments. Our members come from a wide variety of backgrounds, including retired health and education professionals as well as full-time professional linguists – but all have the relevant training and experience to deal with the full range of situations encountered in a community interpreting context.

We offer direct access to fluency in nearly 40 languages spoken locally and can assist in sourcing any less commonly required languages on request.

In addition to full contact details for all interpreters, the BIG Register includes information on

  • language specialisms & proficiency

  • security clearance

  • other relevant qualifications

  • availability

As freelance individuals, many of our members are also registered with various commercial interpreting/translation agencies.  A provider using such an agency should be aware that they may well find that they will be using a Group member.  However, under such circumstances the member will not be operating within the terms and conditions of the Bournemouth Interpreters' Group but within those of that agency.  This applies in particular to the scale of fees charged.  It is in the nature of a commercial agency that the rates may well be considerably higher than those available to providers using the direct access facility afforded by this website.

DISCLAIMER

Please note that Bournemouth Interpreters' Group is a Community Interest Company and has NO connection whatsoever with a website with an almost identical domain name established by a profit-driven commercial agency.  We are flattered to be imitated, but ask providers not to be deceived.

BOOKING PROCEDURES

The BIG Register is a gateway to the contact details of individual freelance community interpreters. All of our members are self-employed and whether engaged directly or through our central bookings procedures their status remains that of a sessional worker at all times.

Where bookings are made directly with the interpreter, using our Find an Interpreter facility, the fees should be agreed for each individual assignment in advance.  With this approach, the Group does not function in the capacity of an agency and has no involvement in or responsibility for such bookings or payments, although if problems arise a Board member will be happy to liaise or offer assistance and guidance.

Where use is made of our central booking facility, all arrangements will be dealt with centrally, and an invoice for our services will be issued by the Group, with us assuming responsibility for the payment of the individual interpreter.

Service Providers are free to weigh up the benefits and drawbacks of each approach and to choose the method which best suits their own circumstances.

The fees charged depend upon the nature of each assignment, but will always fall within an agreed scale which has been negotiated in consultation with Service Providers in the area.  Registered Providers can log in to access full details of this scale of fees.
