Proficiency Guidelines

Members are asked to grade their proficiency in the various language combinations according to the following scale:

5: native fluent
4: non-native (near) fluent
3: competent (incl. technical/specialised)
2: competent (general/some specialised)
1: competent (general)

This grading is applied to the following combinations:

English into Foreign Language (Spoken)
English into Foreign Language (Written)
Foreign Language into English (Spoken)
Foreign Language into English (Written)

The grading is given alongside the language in each member's details in the Register as a series of numbers in the order of the above combinations. Unless a member is bilingual, 5544 or 4455 indicates the highest level of proficiency.

A grading of 0000 indicates that the information has not yet been made available.
